Understanding that electronics can be the focal point of a room, Bill Sofield created the Normandie as a functional design statement. A quarter-cut Mozambique top, with veneers selected for a depth and flicker the French call chatoyance, floats over a framed case. Slightly recessed component shelf and soft-close drawers, the latter with substantial ring pulls. Plinth base. The Normandie is a reference to a particularly luxurious transatlantic ocean liner, bridging French and American Art Deco, in a surge of travel first prompted by Prohibition. The relatively low Modern profile of this form allows it to anchor a large painting or sculpture-as an alternative to media.
